One thing we get questioned on often is how much our adoption fees are, and how they are set. Each animal that comes into our care will usually require some basic attention: Vet exam, deworming, immunizations, and a spay/neuter. The average cost of this becomes our adoption fees. For kittens and puppies, just like human babies they require multiple rounds of immunizations (up to 4) as their immune system matures in order to remain protected. This in conjunction with multiple deworming and their spay/neuter are why their fee is higher than that of an adult- who will normally only require one set of vaccinations on intake.
Having our fees set as the average basic care amount per animal means for every animal adopted we should be able to take in another because we have their “basics” covered. We keep donation funds primarily for emergency intakes (meaning no one has been adopted but an animal needs to come in NOW such as in freezing temps), emergency medical expenses, and anything else over and above the “basics” our guests might need as well as food and litter when we don’t have any donated items on hand, and continued work on the facility.
We do understand that other shelters and rescue groups often subsidize their adoption fees, not recouping all expenses in order to bring in a new animal for every adoption, and that is great! Here at Paws Crossed however the only animals we are able to subsidize at this time are our seniors, not only because they often come to us already spayed/neutered, but as statistically they are more likely to be overlooked by potential adopters so we have made subsidizing their fees a priority to help them get to their happily ever afters!
If you have any questions about adopting, please send us a message and we’d be happy to answer them.
